Growing Your Elephant Ear Plants

Best Time to Plant Elephant Ear Bulbs

For optimal growth, plant your Elephant Ear bulbs in spring after the final frost. Ensure nighttime temperatures stay above 60°F and daytime temperatures reach at least 70°F. The soil should be warm, at least 70°F. If outdoor conditions are still too cold, you can start them indoors in a warm, moist (but not overly wet) environment.

Where to Grow Elephant Ear Bulbs

Elephant Ear plants can thrive in both garden beds and large containers. They do best in partial shade but can also grow in areas with bright, indirect sunlight.

Planting Instructions for Elephant Ear Bulbs

For easier planting, we recommend using a Bulb Auger. Plant bulbs about 4 inches deep, spacing them 2 to 4 feet apart for ample growth.

How to Care for Elephant Ears

Sunlight, Watering, and Fertilizing Needs
Elephant Ears require consistent moisture, especially when exposed to more sunlight. Keep the soil damp but avoid waterlogging. Water early in the morning or late in the afternoon to prevent evaporation. Apply fertilizer every two to three weeks to promote healthy growth.

Which Hardiness Zones Support Elephant Ears?

These plants can be grown annually in USDA zones 3-8. In zones 9-11, they thrive as perennials. If you grow them in pots, they can be moved indoors during winter or chilly nights.

Are Elephant Ears Perennials or Annuals?

In warmer climates, Elephant Ears grow as perennials, returning year after year with their impressive foliage. In colder regions, they are typically grown as annuals unless their bulbs are stored indoors for replanting.

Growth Speed of Elephant Ears

These plants grow rapidly with sufficient light and moisture. You can expect new shoots to emerge within 4 to 5 weeks after planting.

Mature Size of Elephant Ear Plants

Elephant Ears can reach heights of 2 to 6 feet and spread 2 to 4 feet wide, making them a striking focal point in any garden or landscape.
