For landscape planting, after the final frost of spring, when the soil temperature has warmed to 60-75 degrees, plant Heart to Heart®caladium bulbs in warm, well-draining soil. For indoor planting, we recommend soil temperatures of 80-85 degrees for sprouting. Once sprouted, soil temperature must remain above 65 degrees. If you are landscape planting in Northern climates, we recommend starting the bulbs inside to give them a head start before being transplanted outdoors. Use a Power Planter garden auger to dig holes 2-3 inches deep, place the bulb smooth side down, and cover lightly with soil. Water the bulbs thoroughly after planting, ensuring the soil remains moist but not soggy. Since the tops and bottoms of caladium bulbs are often difficult to decipher, we use biodegradable food-grade paint to make planting seamless and easy. All of our jumbo caladium bulbs will be painted, and the painted side should be planted up.
