Planting trees is a tough job, but our tree augers are more than up for the task. These tree planting augers allow you to effortlessly dig holes that are the appropriate size and depth for your trees to grow strong and healthy. Whether you’re planting bare-rooted trees and saplings or trees with larger root balls, we have tree auger bits in various sizes to ensure you can get the job done right. For those dealing with dense clay or rocky soil, the right hole digger for trees can save hours of manual labor while improving planting results.

Our tree augers are not just effective, they are also built to last. Part of our line of heavy-duty augers, each tree auger is proudly made in the USA and hand-welded with high-quality materials that are designed to withstand the test of time. It doesn’t matter if you’re a DIYer or a professional landscaper, our tree augers are the perfect tool for all your tree-planting, fertilization, and aeration needs.

If you’re wondering how to dig holes for trees, deep root fertilize, aerate, or vertical mulch efficiently, our augers simplify the entire process. Unlike manual tools that can leave uneven or shallow holes, an auger to dig holes for trees ensures clean edges and consistent depth. This helps roots settle in more quickly and gives your trees a stronger foundation from day one. With our tree planting auger bits, you’ll be able to cut through even the toughest soils with ease and plant your trees with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Tree Auger?

Our tree augers are designated based on their diameter and length. Some of our heavy-duty augers are versatile enough to serve as tree augers for planting, fertilization, and aeration. Trees need to be planted at certain depths, and our tree planting augers give you the ability to quickly and easily dig holes that are big enough for trees to set their roots and thrive.

How Deep Should a Tree Hole Be?

If you need to dig a tree hole with your tree planting auger, the depth of the hole depends on the size of the tree’s root ball and the type of soil you are planting in. As a general rule, the hole should be deep enough so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil and the root flare (where the trunk widens at the base) is exposed. This is usually about 2 to 4 inches above the surrounding soil. This will vary by the type of tree and its level of maturity, so you should use an appropriately sized tree auger. If you’re unsure which model is the best auger for planting trees,  this guide helps match the right size to your specific project. Or take our auger quiz and see which we recommend.

What Happens When You Don’t Dig a Big Enough Hole for a Tree?

If a tree is planted in a hole that’s too small, it can negatively affect the development of its roots, which can damage the tree and even kill it. Therefore, when digging holes with a tree auger, be sure to leave plenty of room for the tree to spread its roots. Since the drill is doing most of the work, it’s easier to dig a large enough hole with your tree auger.

Can You Use a Post Hole Digger To Plant Trees?

While a post hole digger can be used to plant trees, it often creates narrow, deep holes that aren't ideal for root expansion. A tree hole digger like our tree augers allows for wider, more even planting space, which helps trees develop stronger root systems.

What Else Can a Tree Auger Be Used For?

A tree auger isn’t just for digging planting holes—it’s also great for fertilizing and aerating soil around established trees. Many professionals use a tree auger to break up compacted ground, improve water flow, or even mix compost directly into the root zone. Tree auger bits can also assist in setting posts or installing small landscape features.
