Tree Augers

Our tree augers are designated based on their diameter and length. Some of our heavy-duty augers are versatile enough to serve as tree augers for planting, fertilization, and aeration. Trees need to be planted at certain depths, and our tree planting augers give you the ability to quickly and easily dig holes that are big enough for trees to set their roots and thrive.

If you need to dig a tree hole with your tree planting auger, the depth of the hole depends on the size of the tree’s root ball and the type of soil you are planting in. As a general rule, the hole should be deep enough so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil and the root flare (where the trunk widens at the base) is exposed. This is usually about 2 to 4 inches above the surrounding soil. This will vary by the type of tree and its level of maturity, so you should use an appropriately sized tree auger. If a tree is planted in a hole that’s too small, it can negatively affect the development of its roots, which can damage the tree and even kill it. Therefore, when digging holes with a tree auger, be sure to leave plenty of room for the tree to spread its roots. Since the drill is doing most of the work, it’s easier to dig a large enough hole with your tree auger.

While a post hole digger can be used to plant trees, it often creates narrow, deep holes that aren't ideal for root expansion. A tree hole digger like our tree augers allows for wider, more even planting space, which helps trees develop stronger root systems.

A tree auger isn’t just for digging planting holes—it’s also great for fertilizing and aerating soil around established trees.
