Compatible Drill Drive Type(s):
How to choose a drive type.
3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, or Tube Drive?
Most drills typically come in 2 chuck sizes: 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch. This measurement refers to the
width of the connection point between the drill and auger (or drill bit). Most drills will display
their size in the fine print on the side of the drill or drill chuck (see pictures). A 3/8 inch
drill chuck will ONLY accommodate our 3/8 inch bit offerings. A ⅜ inch auger can function inside of
a drill with a larger ½ inch chuck.
For best results, however, we advise against using a 3/8 inch auger with a 1/2 inch hex drive drill
when digging in densely compacted soil as a 1/2 inch drill generally has much more torque and could
result in damage to the smaller 3/8 inch hex.
Heavy Duty Digging
When you are digging through rough soil with small rocks or dense clay soil we strongly advise
using a drill and auger with a 1/2-inch hex drive to increase safety and torque. Additionally the
drill should have a minimum power rating of 18 volts or more. For digging wide or deep holes in
dense soil a gas powerhead or drill with a 60V
power rating is suggested. Most drills will show the power rating in fine print on the side of
the drill or on the battery itself (see pictures). 60V cordless drills are generally safer than gas
powered units as they include a clutch which prevents injuries. Gas powered units are usually absent
of any such safety feature.
Tube Drives
Tube drives are designed for heavy duty applications. They are available for the larger auger sizes
and are typically used by professional landscapers. A specialized drill or powerhead with a tube
attachment must be purchased. A tube drive auger can be connected to a standard ½ drill chuck with
the help of an adaptor.
Most drills come in 3/8 or 1/2 inch sizes.
Chuck size can sometimes be found on the chuck.
Chuck size and voltage can also be found on the the side of most drills.
Voltage or power ratings can be found on the battery unit.
This hefty plant and earth auger comes with an adaptable tube drive and fits auger powerheads (gas-powered engines) with a 1-inch shaft. The earth and plant auger comes with an adaptable tube drive. It will fit any 1/2-inch drill chuck – or larger drill chucks – with the use of the hex adapter included with this purchase. In addition, the auger bit will fit any drill with a threaded end when purchased with a threaded adapter (sold separately).
The heavy duty digging tip is a replaceable auger tip that will help you tackle the most challenging digging tasks without damaging the main auger. The leading portion of the digging tip has replaceable auger blades (included with purchase). This allows for an easier and more cost-efficient way to keep your equipment performing in top condition for decades.
A gas powerhead or drill with at least 60V of power is suggested. Our drill bundle provides the power you need PLUS TWO bonus batteries and box – available only from Power Planter!
